Alikreukel

Alikreukel can be found in rocky pools exposed during low spring tides or the more adventures people can dive for them.

Alikreukel nearly looks like a overgrown sea snail and have hard shells protecting its insides. They must be cooked while still alive. Its got a white hard trapdoor that close when you pick it up.

Boil it for about 20 minutes in salted water till the trapdoor starts to open. I normally check if its cooked by shaking it and then the meat must slide out of the shell.

Remove the remainder of the shell and take off the gaga bits(entrails) and rinse under clean water. Now you will sit with firm white meat that you can slice and fry in garlick butterand add some herbs. Great for a seafood stirfry.

You can also braai it in its shell with the trap door facing up in its own sauce.

Octopus

This weird looking, multi legged, crab eating cephalopod can be found in rocky pools. Getting them out of there is a mission on it's own. But if you manage to get one and eventually get the skin off they make for some good tasting seafood.

Here is one way to cook it.

After cleaning and tenderizing your occy you can cut the tentacles into small chunks. Bite size 2-3cm.
Dump it into a strong pot with a tight sealing lid. Throw quite a bit of worceshire sauce over the tenderized meat and let it simmer on a low heat in it's own sauce for about 45 minutes. Test it with a fork to see if its nice and tender after 45 minutes.

Serve it with some flavoured rice and a nice green salad.
